Y1- Jeffers Class
Welcome to Jeffers Class!
We will begin the autumn term by learning more about ourselves and the wonderful town of Battersea, where most of us live! Our topic is Home Sweet Home which will give us more of an understanding about our local area and our school. We will also be developing our geographical skills by locating places on maps and drawing our own of our local area. Our ‘3 Ps’ for this topic are:
PLACE: John Burns Primary School
In English, our first book will be Emily Gravett’s Meerkat Mail which will allow us to; practise using our phonics; remembering those capital letters, full stops and finger spaces as well as learning how to write a postcard! Our selection of other fantastic stories will also help us practise our fiction and non-fiction writing.
Throughout the year we continue to develop our maths skills, in particular practising our addition and subtraction skills whilst also learning how to multiply and divide. We will also be learning how to half and quarter objects and quantities as well as telling the time to the hour and half past. We will be very busy this year!
We love reading in Year 1 and encourage the children to read every day, with the expectation that their reading record is signed five times a week. We will be having a weekly prize draw for children who read and get their diaries signed! For every day your child reads, their name will be entered into the draw. They can be entered in a maximum of 5 times a week.
Homework will be set on a Friday and will consist of a weekly Maths task reflecting the learning for that week and another task chosen from the selection of 10 homework tasks on the homework sheet page. This can be found in the children’s homework books. Alongside this we will be setting daily stage reading and weekly spellings.
As we move through the year, if there is anything at all we can help you with, or any concerns you have please feel free talk to us at the beginning or end of the day.
